The Origin Story
History, Heritage, and Wisdom
Lalocura was founded in 2014 by Eduardo “Lalo” Angeles - a fourth-generation master mezcalero, who learned the craft working at his family’s distillery. His father, the late, great Don Lorenzo taught him the art and science of mezcal production, using traditional production techniques that have been passed down for generations. After working for ten years, Lalo decided to pursue a degree in agricultural engineering before later returning to his home village to create his own mezcal.
A mezcal with identity
While the name “Lalocura” is often mistaken for the spanish words “la locura” meaning “the madness,” its true origins are much more personal. It is made up of “Lalo,” the founder’s nickname and “cura” meaning “cure.” In Lalo’s village, mezcal represents healing and is often used as a form of traditional medicine. Lalo says he decided to include his own name in the brand because “ours is a mezcal with identity; when I make it, I express who I am as an individual, and the place from where I come.”
The essence of agaves
Through his mezcales, Lalo aims to showcase the subtle flavours of each agave variety. Similar to any great chef, or winemaker, his focus is not on transforming his ingredients into something new, but expressing their subtleties in interesting ways. While each batch will vary with its own unique qualities, every bottle of Lalocura Tobala will capture the true essence of the agaves and the spirit of Santa Catarina Minas, Mexico.

Mezcales with character
Each mezcal produced by Lalo is a personal work of art. Each batch is original and unique, showcasing the individual character of the agaves, and his hometown of Santa Catarina Minas. Conscientious about where his bottles are sold, in the same way that he is about what goes into them, this is one of the first times that Lalo’s mezcals have been available outside of Mexico.
