Flavour Intensity
Aberdeen, Scotland
Orchard Gin is made in Porter’s distillery, conveniently nested in the basement of The Orchid, the founding team’s bar in Aberdeen, Scotland. The gin is produced in one of three stills that the team keeps running perpetually, before it gets sent off for bottling.
Du champagne, s’il vous plaît
Orchard Gin is the most recent offering from Porter’s Gin, and this time the team has decided to celebrate its love of a good French wine. Fans of the “blanc de blanc” variety of champagne, the chaps have turned their attention to the chardonnay grapes issuing from the Champagne region, researching the wines produced there to see how to best reproduce this type of intensely fruity flavour palate in gin format.
Retaining the flavours
The Porter’s team makes use of cold-distilling techniques, ensuring the fruits and botanicals that go into the gins are never cooked, but retain all the freshness and purity of their original flavours. For Orchard Gin, green apples and pears were added to Porter’s classic juniper base, giving the spirit its fresh and fruity character. The team then used a soybean distillate, which gives the gin its instantly recognizable butter and biscuit tasting notes.
The Brains Behind It
Made in a bar, not a boardroom
Porter's founders Alex, Ben, and Josh emboss this phrase on the bottom of each of their bottles because, well, it is! In 2015 the team started playing with cold-distillation to bring flavours out of ingredients for creating new and interesting cocktails, before long they decided to create their own gin. They are a team dedicated to creating high-flavour, high-quality gins using modern techniques that are built for mixing, sharing, and creating better drinks.
