Flavour Intensity
Jura, France
Located in the east of France, bordering Switzerland, Jura is a gorgeously green region filled with lakes and valleys. Its heights are scattered with thickly forested mountains and alpine plains, where chamois and lynxes roam freely. Its vast plains have been home to vineyards for centuries, and Jura wines are unusual, delicious, and deeply distinctive of the region.
Everything local
Pur Malt Vin Jaune 9 Ans is a whisky issuing entirely from the Jura region of France. The barley that goes into the malt comes from a chain of local farmers. Creator Bruno Mangin uses it to brew a special type of beer, designed to be distilled. After the distillation in a tiny local armagnac distillery, Pur Malt Vin Jaune 9 Ans is aged for nine years, in barrels which formerly contained Jura yellow wine.
A regional flavour
“Vin jaune de Jura”, or Jura yellow wine, is a local speciality that has been produced in the region since medieval times. It has many things in common with sherry, although none of sherry’s sweetness – its character comes from being matured in a barrel under a layer of yeast (known as a “veil”) that sits on the wine’s surface. Pur Malt Vin Jaune 9 Ans reveals the dry, nutty flavours of Jura yellow wine, given to it during the ageing process.
The Brains Behind It
A modern-day prophet
Bruno Mangin has always been ahead of his time. He began as a brewer, starting his own craft brewery in 1994 when craft beers were a distant dream of the future. Likewise, he began making craft whiskies in 1999 when such a thing was basically unheard of in France. His whiskies are not an imitation of any other style, but are resolutely French, expressing all the character and personality of Bruno’s region.
