São Paulo, Brazil
Pablo Meneghal, the first of the Meneghal family to produce cachaça, first arrived in Santos in 1888 to try his hand as a sugarcane farmer. Sugarcane has been grown in Brazil almost from the very beginning. After being settled by Portuguese explorers in 1500, the first sugarcane was planted in 1502, and cachaça production began in 1532 with the creation of the first copper still. Legend has it that Sir Francis Drake, or “El Drago” as the Brazilians call him, was the inventor of the famous caipirinha cocktail in 1546. Cachaça accompanied the Brazilians throughout their quest for freedom from the Portuguese, and is still the national drink today.
A Luxurious Blend
Yaguara Blue is an organic, gluten-free artisanal blended cachaça. It is rested in a stainless steel vat for 10 months, then aged in European oak barrels for 5 - 6 years. As the first organic white blended cachaça in the world, this smooth, stylish, modern spirit aims to push cachaça firmly into the luxury category.
Expertise and Local Products
The local sugarcane chosen to produce Yaguara Blue is harvested and pressed within 24 hours to maintain maximum freshness. Locally-sourced yeast is selected for the fermentation process to ensure a high-quality wine known as “vinho”. The distillation process is where the magic happens. Master blender Erwin Weimann relies on all his knowhow to cut off the “head” and “tail” of the distillate, retaining only the very heart. Yaguara Blue is then rested, aged, and triple-filtered before bottling.
The Brains Behind It
Tradition Meets Modern Science
After Pablo Meneghal started in the late 1800s as a sugarcane farmer, there has been a long line of cachaça producers in the Meneghal family. Pablo’s great-great-grandson, Thyrnos, is the latest of the Meneghal family to distill small-batch cachaça. In 2013, he called upon the late Erwin Weimann to help create Yaguara. Erwin’s 40 years of experience in chemistry and his expertise in blending proved to be the perfect foil for the Meneghal family’s artisanal cachaça distillations. The result is a refined, modern, refined and ultra-stylish blend.
